The present paper reports two new species of Buxus from the Oligocene Ningming Formation of Guangxi, South China, on the basis of several compressed fossil leaves. Buxus ningmingensis sp. nov. is characterized by an elliptic to ovate shape; pinnate venation with marginal secondary, long hairs on the adaxial side of the midvein base; and amphistomatic, anomocytic stomata with a prominent outer ring. All of these characteristics suggest a closest af?nity to the living Buxus microphylla subsp. sinica. Another new species identi?ed as Buxus preaustro-yunnanensis sp. nov. is characterized by the diagnostic formation of its admedially branched tertiaries, the trunks of which are often strongly thickened by sclereides. This species is most similar to the extant Buxus austro-yunnanensis. The co-occurrence of Buxus ningmingensis sp. nov. and Buxus preaustro-yunnanensis sp. nov. suggests that these two Buxus lived during the Oligocene under a warm, tropical to subtropical climate, similar to the current climate of Ningming. Our ?ndings provide the earliest fossil evidence of Buxus leaves with detailed illustrations of leaf architectural and cuticular features. The occurrence of these two species indicates that Buxus began to diversify in Guangxi no later than the Oligocene.  相似文献

This paper presents a set of bulk geochemical and mineralogical data from a paleoweathering profile located in Zunyi District, Northern Guizhou, China. It was formed at the top of the Hanjiadian Formation of the Lower Silurian. A truncated, argillic, gleyed, kryptic paleospodosol is recognized in the paleoweathering profile. Ratios of immobile elements (Ti/Zr, Ti/Al) and their binary (e.g., Nb vs. Zr/TiO2 and Th/Sc vs. Zr/Sc), triangular diagrams (La-Th-Sc, Th-Sc-Zr/10, Zr-Cr-Ga) reflect that the Gaojiayan paleosol is the product of in-situ weathering of gray-green silty mudstone of the underlying Hanjiadian Formation. Mass balance calculations indicate K enrichment and Na enrichment in the upper and lower portions of paleosol, respectively. These findings both are the results of transgression, which brings substantial concentrations of such elements as K, Na, and Sr. In particular, K enrichment is achieved by the illitization of kaolinite. The biological processes of terrestrial vascular plants also enhance K concentration, especially at the top of the paleosol. Na enrichment is a consequence of albitization and/or adsorption by clay minerals through cation exchange. The mass distributions and relative mass changes of rare earth elements (REEs) in the studied profile display characteristics of vertical zonation. Three peaks in total REEs content are observed, indicating two paleoclimatic or paleoenvironmental changes. Mineralogical characteristics indicate that the paleoclimate changed first from warm and humid to cold and dry and later, to dry and lightly warmer. The corresponding soil environment varies from weakly acidic to strongly alkaline and later, to weakly acidic. Mass translocation characteristics of REEs and several transition metals suggest that the Gaojiayan paleosol may have undergone top erosion.  相似文献

系统总结了近几十年来应用风尘石英的物理和化学特性(如粒度、形貌特征、电子自旋共振(ESR)信号强度、结晶度指数(CI)、含量和通量,以及δ~(18)O等)进行物源和古气候示踪等方面的研究进展,并分析了其中存在的问题。结果表明石英的这些指标具有稳定性,可以指示物源和古气候变化,对目前研究提出的问题和建议也对今后用风尘石英指示古气候变化的研究有重要的借鉴意义。  相似文献

The Holocene paleoclimate of the Caucasus region is rather complex and not yet well understood: while existing studies are mainly based on pollen records from high-altitude and humid lowland regions, no records are available from the semi-humid to semi-arid south-eastern Caucasian lowlands. Therefore, this study investigated compound-specific δ2H and δ13C isotopes of leaf wax biomarkers from Holocene floodplain soils in eastern Georgia. Our results show that the leaf wax δ2H signal from the paleosols mostly reflects changes in the moisture source and its isotopic composition. Depleted δ2H values before ~8 cal ka bp change towards enriched values after ~5 cal ka bp and become again depleted after ~1.6 cal ka bp. This trend could be caused by Holocene changes of the isotopic compositions of the Black and eastern Mediterranean Sea, and/or by varying contribution of both moisture sources linked with the North Atlantic Oscillation. The leaf wax δ13C signal from the paleosols directly indicates varying local water availability and drought stress. Depleted δ13C values before ~8 and after ~5 cal ka bp indicate wetter local conditions with higher water availability, whereas more enriched values during the middle Holocene (~8 until at least 5 cal ka bp ) indicate drier conditions with increased drought stress.  相似文献

地处板块接触地带的滇西北剑川地区是研究新构造运动的重要场所。剑川盆地保留有较为完整的新生代地层,在1:250000地质图上,新生界自下而上为古新统勐野井组、始新统宝相寺组、渐新统金丝厂组、中新统双河组和上新统剑川组;其中双河组为一套含可采煤层的砂泥岩夹泥灰岩沉积,剑川组为一套火山-沉积岩组。近期的研究揭示双河组和剑川组均属始新世,但发表的年龄相互包含,并没有清楚的把两者分开。本文采用Ar-Ar和锆石U-Pb方法测试了双河组和剑川组顶、底凝灰岩的年龄,辅以岩体、岩脉的年龄,重新厘定了两个组的顶、底年龄。剑川组顶部凝灰岩锆石SHRIMP U-Pb年龄为34 Ma±;底部凝灰岩黑云母Ar-Ar坪年龄为36 Ma±,与底部侵入岩脉的锆石SHRIMP U-Pb年龄一致;中上部侵入岩脉的黑云母Ar-Ar坪年龄在34~36 Ma之间。同时,老君山岩体、玉召块岩体和沙帽山岩体的锆石SHRIMP U-Pb年龄在34~35 Ma之间。剑川火山-沉积岩组的年龄集中在34~36 Ma之间,属始新世晚期。剑川双河煤矿矿部至三家村及五家村一带,双河组之下新发现一套凝灰岩,其黑云母Ar-Ar坪年龄和锆石SHRIMP U-Pb年龄均为37 Ma±,表明双河组的起始年代不超过37 Ma;双河组形成于36~37 Ma之间,也属始新世晚期。新的结果表明剑川盆地始新统地层应包括宝相寺组、金丝厂组、双河组和剑川组,缺失渐新统沉积。结合其他盆地的年龄数据,表明剑川乃至整个云南地区在渐新世期间为褶皱隆起期。  相似文献

二叠纪- 三叠纪之交发生了地史上最大规模的生物灭绝事件,该事件可能与当时气候环境的强烈变化有关。前人对该时期较连续的海相地层揭示的古气候研究较为成熟,而对同时期陆相地层的研究缺乏系统性,研究资料需要进一步完善。本文选取豫西宜阳地区上二叠统孙家沟组为研究对象,运用沉积学、矿物学与元素地球化学等方法对该时期的古气候进行恢复,并与同时期陆相地层对比,进而讨论气候变化对该时期生物灭绝的影响。结果表明:①宜阳地区孙家沟组经历了滨湖- 浅湖- 滨湖等亚相的演化过程,其地层中岩相变化、古生物化石缺失、大量的钙质结核及其它沉积构造的出现揭示了孙家沟组的上段气候明显比下段炎热干旱。②元素地球化学指标以及粘土矿物组合的垂向变化等指示了该时期的气候经历了温湿向炎热半干旱- 干旱转变。③宜阳地区孙家沟组的气候指标所得出的结论与其他地区同时期陆相地层古气候的变化基本一致,反映了研究区与同时期全球古气候的变化存在一致性。二叠纪末期温度的骤升、气候极度干旱化以及陆表生态系统遭受毁灭性破坏等因素,可能是导致或加速陆地生物灭绝的主要原因之一。本次研究对该时期气候变化与生物灭绝之间的关系具有一定的指导意义,为探讨全球P- T之交生物灭绝的原因提供新的证据。  相似文献

Contemporary precipitation patterns in the Caribbean region are spatially variable, and the small number of Holocene paleoclimatic records may not adequately capture patterns of variation in the past. The hydrological history of Grenada was inferred from paleolimnological analyses of sediment cores from two crater lakes on the island. The basins were formed by volcanic activity some time during the Last Termination, but were dry between ca. 13 000 and ca. 7200 cal. a BP. After filling, the lakes were initially very shallow, and sedimentation was interrupted by a hiatus ca. 6300–5500 cal. a BP, followed by deposition of a thick tephra in both sites. After 5500 cal. a BP, lake level shows considerable multi‐centennial variability, superimposed upon a long‐term trend of generally higher lake level after 3200 cal. a BP. The pattern of lake‐level variation in Grenada shows some similarity with other Caribbean paleoclimatic records in terms of the timing of transitions, but differs from several classic studies in the sign of inferred precipitation change. The differences among records may reflect spatially variable precipitation patterns in the past in response to the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and to sea surface temperature influences on the trade winds and Caribbean low‐level jet. This paper provides an incisive review of paleoclimate science and its relevance to natural-resource management within the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB). The drought of 1997–2010 focussed scientific, public and media attention on intrinsic climate variability and the confounding effect of human activity, especially in terms of water-resource management. Many policy and research reviews make statements about future planning with little consideration of climate change and without useful actionable knowledge. In order to understand future climate changes, modellers need, and demand, better paleoclimate data to constrain their model projections. Here, we present an insight into a number of existing long-term paleoclimate studies relevant to the MDB. Past records of climate, in response to orbital forcing (glacial–interglacial cycles) are found within, and immediately outside, the MDB. High-resolution temperature records, spanning the last 105 years, exist from floodplains and cave speleothems, as well as evidence from lakes and their associated lunettes. More recently, historical climate records show major changes in relation to El Niño–Southern Oscillation cycles and decadal shifts in rainfall regimes. A considerable body of research currently exists on the past climates of southeastern Australia but, this has not been collated and validated over large spatial scales. It is clear that a number of knowledge gaps still exist, and there is a pressing need for the establishment of new paleoclimatic research within the MDB catchment and within adjacent, sensitive catchments if past climate science is to fulfil its potential to provide policy-relevant information to natural-resource management into the future.  相似文献

Campaspe Formation, a surficial, fluviatile, sand-dominated unit, is extensively developed in the Charters Towers region of north Queensland where it covers an area of 11 000 km2, overlying Paleozoic basement and erosional remnants of Paleogene Southern Cross Formation. In the northern part of its distribution, it is interlayered with, and overlain by, flows of Nulla Basalt. It is dated as mid-Pliocene, based on the 3.48 Ma age of the Myrrilumbing Flow interlayered with its upper part, an antiquity consistent with thin ferricrete locally developed at its surface. The formation defines the Campaspe Surface at an elevation of 200–440 m in the present landscape, falling gently from upland to the west towards the current channel of the Burdekin River. This surface is a relict alluvial plain little incised by easterly flowing tributaries of the Burdekin River and has survived, essentially intact, from the early Pliocene. Geometry of the formation is established from some 2000 mineral exploration drill holes and seismic profiling. It has an average thickness of some 60 m, reaching a maximum of over 200 m. It blankets a pre-existing, low relief landscape in which a basement ridge divides it into two sub-basins that mirror the present drainage. The formation consists of poorly sorted sandstone with minor conglomerate and siltstone, and contains paleosol horizons with associated calcrete. Matrix supported sandstone in the succession, indicates deposition in part from hyperconcentrated flows. Sandstones generally show poorly defined planar layering as typical of ephemeral overbank and terminal splay sediment bodies but beds with cross-lamination, indicating fluvial channel bed forms, are also present. They are characterised by pore-filling silt and mud, largely emplaced by post-depositional infiltration, such that the unit produces essentially no groundwater. Facies attributes are consistent with fluvial deposition in ephemeral, dry climate, distributary system, with inefficient cross-drainage discharge that induced aggradation, resulting in a substantial sediment body perched in the landscape. Framework grain compositions show the formation to be mineralogically mature, representing erosional debris derived from intense weathering in an earlier climatic regime recorded, at least in part, by duricrust developed in the fluviatile–lacustrine Southern Cross Formation of Paleogene age. Such duricrust intervals are now upstanding in the landscape, representing erosional remnants from inverted relief developed in a mid-Cenozoic, pluvial, landscape cycle. Paleoclimatic signature of the Campaspe Formation extends the record of Pliocene aridity, widely recognised elsewhere in Australia, to northeast Queensland. In large part the landscape of the Charters Towers district is relict from the early Pliocene and is in the process of readjusting to more pluvial climatic regimes. By implication, Pliocene aridity has, on a small scale, exerted a strong influence on the present physiography of Australian landscapes.  相似文献

本文对取自西菲律宾海区的三个柱状沉积物岩芯的铁族元素地球化学行为进行了系统的研究。从元素的含量及剖面变化、元素的相关性及组合特征,铁族元素与主元素的关系以及元素的赋存状态等方面探讨了物质来源、沉积作用和古气候,并据此进行了地层划分。沉积物有4种来源:海底火山源、生物源、自生源和陆源。海底火山物质提供了较多的铁族元素,相形之下,自生沉积作用较弱。元素地层学研究表明,在全新世温暖期和晚更新世寒冷期铁族元素表现出不同的地球化学行为,尤以Mn和亲生物(Ca)元素对气候的反映灵敏。WP_2孔和WP_(40)孔铁族元素特征相似,与WP_1孔差别较大。  相似文献
